QUICK ANSWER

What you need to know

A first-time snorkeler can enjoy a guided Antigua experience if they can swim, are comfortable entering open water and meet the activity’s health and age requirements. The most important step is to describe your ability honestly before booking.

“Beginner” and “non-swimmer” are not the same

A beginner may be new to a mask and snorkel but still be a capable swimmer. A non-swimmer cannot safely substitute a flotation aid or sea scooter for swimming ability on Skylork’s snorkeling activities. If you are uncertain, contact the team before reserving.

What the orientation covers

Skylork water activities include an orientation and safety briefing of approximately 30 minutes. Expect equipment fitting, communication signals, route expectations and guidance on entering and using the equipment. Listen even if you have snorkeled before; every site and device is different.

Make the mask and breathing feel easier

  • Arrive unhurried so you can fit equipment carefully.
  • Breathe slowly through the snorkel rather than taking rapid breaths.
  • Keep hair and fabric away from the mask seal.
  • Tell the guide early if the fit is uncomfortable.
  • Stay close to the group and avoid racing ahead.

Does a sea scooter make it easier?

A sea scooter provides powered movement and can feel intuitive after instruction, but it does not remove the need to swim, steer, breathe calmly or respond to the guide. Some beginners love it; others prefer classic snorkeling first. Choose for comfort, not because you expect the machine to compensate for limited ability.

Know when not to participate

Read Skylork’s medical and participation guidance. Do not snorkel after drinking alcohol, when acutely unwell, or when a condition makes swimming or breathing unsafe. Bring required medication and disclose relevant concerns before entering the water.

If you meet the requirements, compare the classic guided snorkel and powered sea-scooter tour.

Questions visitors ask

Do I need previous snorkeling experience?

Not necessarily, but you must be able to swim and be comfortable entering the sea.

Can a non-swimmer use a sea scooter?

No. A sea scooter is not a substitute for swimming ability.

How much time should I allow?

Allow about 2.5 hours for check-in, briefing, fitting, the activity and wrap-up. Larger groups can take longer.

FROM THE WATER

Why the first few minutes are deliberately unhurried

A beginner needs time to settle the mask, place the face in the water and find a natural breathing rhythm before moving away from shore. That is why Skylork separates orientation and practice from the guided route.
